Type K Thermocouple Assembly

Type K (Chromel/Alumel) thermocouple assemblies — general-purpose industrial

Overview

The most widely used thermocouple type, with a Chromel (Ni-Cr) positive leg and Alumel (Ni-Al) negative leg. Type K offers a wide range and good resistance to oxidation, making it the default choice for general industrial measurement in oxidizing or inert atmospheres.

Key Features

  • Wide range: -270°C to +1372°C with linear Seebeck output (~41 µV/°C)
  • Standard tolerance ±2.2°C / 0.75% and Special tolerance ±1.1°C / 0.4%
  • Grounded, ungrounded, or exposed junctions for response vs. isolation trade-off
  • Sheaths in 316SS, Inconel 600, and 310SS for high-temperature service
  • ANSI (yellow/red) and IEC (green/white) color-coded wire available
  • Wire sizes from 8 AWG bare to 32 AWG MgO mineral-insulated
  • Optional duplex elements for redundant or differential measurement

Applications

  • General industrial process temperature
  • Boilers, kilns, and furnaces (oxidizing atmospheres)
  • Plastics extrusion and injection molding
  • Food processing ovens and fryers
  • HVAC ductwork and exhaust monitoring
  • Heat treating fixtures and load surveys
